The Pervasive Internet

The pervasive internet and the massive deployment of web services on devices, smart metering, and new streaming sensor technologies will create "data torrents and rivers" of such volumes that traditional data warehouses and analytic tools struggle to keep up and manage the information, let alone provide close to real-time analytics, processing, and controls based on that information. Harbor Research, 2006, suggests that there will be over 35 Billion IP addressable devices somewhere out there, producing streams of data in real-time (see Figure 1). Microsoft has released Web Services on Devices (WSD) and predicts that all equipment and appliances will have the ability to communicate over the web.
